The University of Alberta Libraries seeks a full-time Public Service Assistant with a strong customer service orientation for the Cameron Science & Technology Library.

The Science & Technology Library offers an integrated service desk model for providing reference and information services, circulation/borrower services, and technology support services; and operates in a highly electronic environment with collections and services in support of the research, teaching and information needs of the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences.

Duties

  • Provides reference and information services to students, faculty and the general public, at a service point, either in person or using electronic reference software (chat/text), e-mail or the telephone
  • Assists users in discovery: finding information with the Library catalogue and print or online research tools and resources; provides point-of-need instruction
  • Provides support for a range of e-book and database platforms
  • Assists clients with technology-related questions and problems, including troubleshooting hardware/software problems and initiating a course of action to provide solutions
  • Provides circulation/borrower services including charging out and renewal of library materials, and uses the online circulation module of the integrated library system to provide client account services; opens/closes Library
  • Updates and maintains web pages and assists in the development of user discovery tools and subject guides
  • Participates in the development and implementation of unit services and operations, including special projects based on expertise and experience

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of post-secondary education in a related subject discipline; Library and Information Studies Diploma is strongly desirable
  • 2 years of related library experience, supplemented with regular updating of skills and training in new skills and resources as required
  • Strong customer service, communication (verbal and written) and organization skills
  • A positive enthusiastic attitude, a proactive approach to work and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and environments
  • Ability to work both independently and collegially in a team environment
  • Ability to continually learn and share knowledge with staff and users
  • Familiarity and comfort with desktop software (i.e. MS Office), Internet and database search techniques, and demonstrated aptitude for working in an electronic environment
  • Familiarity with SirsiDynix Symphony, NEOS catalogue and other discipline-related electronic and print resources preferred
  • Ability to work regular opening and evening shifts and rotate through term-based schedules that include a Saturday or Sunday as a regular day of work
