The Research Associate will be responsible for assisting and supporting the Principal Investigators (PIs) in the overall operation of the study related to the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons under different redox conditions. Duties include/but are not limited to: designing and conducting experiments and performing chemical, metagenomics and bioinformatics analyses. This position works closely with the PIs in writing reports and peer-reviewed articles from the generated data. The Research Associate must be able to work independently and monitor the accuracy, completeness, and relevancy of all data and information collected. 


  • Works with the PIs in designing and conducting experiments
  • Prepares samples for chemical and molecular analyses, applies next-generation sequencing approaches to obtain 'omics' data, and delivers high quality and timely bioinformatics analyses to help comprehend hydrocarbon biodegradation pathways under different redox conditions
  • Writes research papers, progress reports and presents results at research group meetings, workshops and scientific conferences
  • Participates in the preparation of research grant applications/proposals
  • Trains or guides other laboratory fellows in molecular an bioinformatics analyses and interpretation; documents bioinformatics procedures for laboratory use


  • PhD in Environmental Microbiology or a related discipline
  • Experience in conducting microbial genomics and transcriptomics analyses
  • Experience in applying bioinformatics tools to analyze data in one or more common bioinformatics environments
  • Experience in writing project proposals, research applications, reports and research papers
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position is for a term length of one year, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at: and annual salary range commensurate with education and qualifications.
