The Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences (ALES) is looking for a Specialist, Recruitment and Communications, to join our team. We need someone with superb interpersonal skills who has their finger on the pulse of what students want and need. Student recruiter. Social media expert. Enthusiastic communicator. Collaborator. You are a connection to the student voice and our audiences. You are curious about the who, the what, the why and the how. You like working in a team environment where there is still ample time to create independently. You are cross-culturally sensitive and able to create trusting relationships with our stakeholders.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean (Academic and Student Programs) with additional accountability to the Director of Communications, the Specialist, Recruitment and Communications promotes the Faculty of ALES programs and initiatives to prospective students and is responsible for meeting strategic recruitment goals and bringing exceptional students into the faculty’s undergraduate degree programs. The Specialist, Recruitment and Communications also implements elements of the faculty’s strategic communications plan and serves a full range of communications and marketing needs.

This position may include travel to high schools, colleges and universities throughout Edmonton, Alberta and Canada. The hours of work may include evenings and weekends.


 Student Recruitment

  • Develops and implements the annual recruitment strategy for undergraduate programs in the Faculty of ALES.
  • Generates and maintains metrics and tracking of admissions and registrations in order to measure recruitment outcomes in relation to recruitment strategy.
  • Develops all ALES recruitment publications and materials.
  • Organizes and represents the Faculty of ALES at recruitment events, which includes booth design, developing presentation materials, public speaking, and managing volunteers.
  • Advises prospective students and their parents on administrative and academic matters related to program selection, admissions and registration.

Communications and Marketing

  • Plays a key role in the development and implementation of targeted marketing and communications strategic plans for the faculty.
  • Helps ensure faculty priorities are met through superior communication skills and attention to detail and timelines.
  • Develops creative ways to highlight programming activities.
  • Participates in communications and marketing activities, including environmental scans, analysis and identity and brand management.


  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Two to three years of related experience is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communications skills, including strong public speaking and presentation abilities. Communications, public relations or marketing experience in a post-secondary environment is preferred.
  • Experience working with students is essential. Demonstrated knowledge of student recruitment issues.
  • Ability to relate well to students, parents and academic staff.
  • Ability to engage both small and large groups.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, cross-cultural sensitivity, ability to establish and maintain good rapport with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, initiative, judgment, and critical thinking.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (particularly PowerPoint), FileMaker Pro and Campus Solutions is an asset.
  • A working knowledge of the academic policies and procedures of this university is an asset.
