With a primary focus on VMware virtualization & Microsoft Active Directory services, this position reports to the Senior IT Team Lead (SITL).  Other duties include designing, developing and troubleshooting technology solutions for the Faculty of Engineering (FOE). The successful candidate must be detail-oriented with strong technical expertise and multitasking skills. With the ability to thrive in an agile, fast-paced environment, and they keep abreast of innovations, regulation changes, and other industry developments.


The main focus of this appointment will be working with VMware and Microsoft Active Directory. Therefore the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Build and install computer infrastructure, which encompasses hardware, servers, and virtual machines, using a VMware environment.
  • Monitor client systems daily and pinpoint problem areas. Proactively design and install upgrades, releases, and application patches. On a less frequent basis,  update drivers, servers, and firmware with newer technology.
  • Respond promptly to issues reported by clients, conducting root cause analysis and going through various testing scenarios for thorough resolution.
  • Create and maintain documentation for all system-related processes and procedures that the successful candidate is in charge of, including project requirements, changes and upgrades, implementation plans, and support tickets. Another paperwork-heavy task will be creating summary reports for clients or internal management
  • Configures and maintains Windows Active Directory Services such as KMS, DNS, DHCP and DFS
  • Responsible for file system access control utilizing ACL’s and role-based user access
  • Liaises with IST staff regarding connectivity to the University of Alberta networks and backbone connection to the global internet
  • Conducts server builds
  • Monitors server software/hardware
  • Acquires, manages, troubleshoots and repairs server hardware components
  • Installs, manages, troubleshoots and repairs Windows Server operating systems
  • Strives to achieve 99.99% server and network uptime
  • Assists faculty with grant acquisitions for hardware and software

The successful candidate must possess the following skills:

  • Advanced proficiency with vSphere, vSAN, and other VMware products and platforms. In general, they must be adept at network engineering, with working knowledge of firewalls, servers, networks, and operating systems
  • Excellent problem-solver who can determine the main source of product issues and provide quick, elegant solutions
  • Must ensure that all details are correct while building or maintaining IT infrastructure, from software code to configuration settings, in order to avoid malfunctions, bugs, and security breaches
  • Although their work is mostly analytical, the successful candidate must possess a strong customer orientation, as they provide technical support as requested and explain complex topics in layman’s terms
  • Must be comfortable with technical writing if they are to produce documentation about infrastructure design, quality standards, testing procedures, and other essential project information. Likewise, they must be able to interpret diagrams and system plans


  • Minimum BSc in Computer Science; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • 3 years of experience in a complex multi-platform environment with expertise in Microsoft Windows 2016 servers, Microsoft Active Directory and Windows 7
  • Certification as a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and/or Microsoft Certified System Administrator (MCSA) is highly desirable
  • Proficient in administrating in both Windows and UNIX systems
  • Good abilities in scripting skills such as Shell, Perl and PowerShell
  • Microsoft certifications: Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) is highly desired
  • Virtualization certifications: VMware Certified Professional (VCP) is highly desired
