Under the direction of the Team Lead, Student Financial Support, the Financial Aid Coordinator holds primary responsibility for expertise and support of all of the financial aid programs offered by Student Financial Support including emergency funding programs, government student loans, bursaries, and financial literacy and outreach. Major responsibilities include: administration of emergency funding programs, in person student advising, providing advocacy for students to facilitate issue resolution, liaising with all provincial and federal loan providers, engaging key stakeholders to support effective and efficient processes, and advising on practices and procedures related to financial aid programs.  


  • Supports emergency funding programs through the interview and assessment of financial need, provision of financial counselling, issue of loan funds and the monitoring of students’ files
  • Performs the financial need assessment of bursary recipients
  • Working with the Specialist, reviews bursary and emergency program guidelines for assessment and recommends changes to the administration of financial aid programs
  • Advocates for students in appeal and/or financial need situations and collaborates with the appropriate financial aid resource
  • Provides expertise on the application procedures for all provincial and federal loan programs and knowledge in all University process and procedures related to government loans
  • Acts as a liaison for students regarding issues related to loan payment delays and related problems with loan provider and Financial Services
  • Resolves complex problems arising from loan eligibility issues
  • Works closely with First Peoples’ House to provide financial aid support and advising to Indigenous students at the University of Alberta
  • Supports the Specialist and Team Lead in gathering data for the production of reports on trends and projections related to financial aid programming
  • Reviews administrative procedures and makes recommendations to the Specialist and stakeholders to streamline the process
  • Assists and provides back-up coverage for the other Coordinators, Specialists, and Team Lead as required
  • Acts as a resource to faculties, students, schools, donors, staff, and public regarding all financial aid programs available at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels for both domestic and international students
  • Advises and counsels students, some of whom are in distress and experiencing difficult situations, and provides on-campus references to supporting student programs
  • Assists in the coordination of award ceremonies and special events as needed
  • Performs other related duties as necessary


  • Undergraduate degree required; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Minimum two years of experience in a post-secondary environment advising students and department staff on policies, processes and procedures
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with public speaking experience
  • Experience compiling, analyzing and reporting on financial aid statistics, trends and projections an asset
  • Knowledge of current University of Alberta policy, as it relates to awards and protocol, is preferred
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Campus Solutions is preferred
  • Excellent organization and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and meet multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to deal with sensitive and/or confidential information in a professional manner
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel and Outlook) including working with complex spreadsheets
