The Office of the Vice-President (Research) is seeking an energetic, client-oriented professional to work in a dynamic and challenging environment. Reporting jointly to the Vice-President (Research) and the Senior Human Resource Partner, Human Resource Services (HRS), the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) will be responsible for providing strategic human resources leadership to the portfolio.

As a member of the management team, the HRBP plays a key role in strategic planning and implementation of human resources policies and practices within the portfolio. The position will ensure compliance with University of Alberta policies, procedures, and collective agreements while advising and guiding human resource best practice.

The position plans, directs, manages and oversees activities and operations in the following areas:

  • Strategic human resources management
  • Workforce planning and organizational development and effectiveness
  • Recruitment, selection and retention
  • Performance management
  • Learning and development
  • Employee and labour relations
  • Human resources leadership and administration 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic human resources advice and leadership to the Vice-President (Research) portfolio
  • Providing advice and support on sound HR practice around areas including, but not limited to, performance management, coaching, counseling, discipline, position disruption, complaints, layoffs and effective workplace relationships
  • Evaluating programs and processes to ensure HR policies, procedures and HR best practice are in place
  • Working with the leadership team to effectively manage change and transition
  • Serving as a key support to the portfolio for the management of HR and compensation processes of all categories of employees
  • Providing advice on collective agreement interpretation relating to both academic and support staff agreements
  • Developing effective working relationships with staff associations to promote a collaborative and problem solving approach to issues management
  • Leading or facilitating the implementation of University-wide human resource strategies, initiatives, and programs within the portfolio
  • Maintaining collaborative working relationships on behalf of the Vice-President (Research) portfolio with central Human Resource offices
  • Supervising staff responsible for performing administrative HR functions within the portfolio

 Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will possess a post-secondary degree, preferably business related, with a specialization in human resources or a related discipline, and significant progressively responsible experience in human resources; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • A minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in a large unionized organization with successful approaches to staffing, retention and performance management
  • CPHR designation will be an asset
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability and success in accomplishing objectives through innovative management techniques, promoting teamwork and continuous improvement
  • Superior problem solving and critical thinking skills to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, identify and communicate consequences of proposed actions, recommend best options and implement approved solutions in support of goals
  • Sound judgment, as well as direct HR experience and knowledge in methods and techniques for conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation, staffing, employee development and performance management
  • Ability to foster a cooperative working environment, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with business partners, fellow employees and professionals in related fields
  • Experience in managing diversity and inclusivity as well as demonstrated sensitivity for cultural differences
  • Excellent oral presentation and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated competencies in professionalism, results orientation, teamwork, flexibility/adaptability, and customer service
  • Ability to work effectively within the University’s organizational structure, and in compliance with administrative and financial policies
