The Faculty of Engineering (FOE) is seeking a relationship centric, organized, ambitious leader to fill the role of Manager, Research Operations (MRO).  As one of the top five engineering schools in Canada, FOE has research initiatives that drive, build and shape the future society through research and innovation.  In this highly autonomous role, the MRO is accountable for all administrative operations associated with specific research initiatives within the faculty.

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, FOE and serving as a member of the faculty’s operational leadership team you will provide management, leadership, resources and tools to the specific research initiatives such as research centres.  The MRO will manage an annual research funding budget of 3-4 million, 3-5 research support staff that report indirectly and interact with approximately 40 to 60 PIs and board members for such research initiatives. 

Specifically, you will: 

  • Be the central point of contact (internal and external stakeholders, governing boards, committees, PIs, partners and research support staff) and provide expert support on key operational issues
  • Manages all aspects of strategic planning, finance, human resources, facilities and communications for the research initiatives
  • Oversees and supports the governance structure of research areas; ensures appropriate approval channels are in place for all new projects, policy changes, intellectual property patenting, etc.; works with the Office of the Dean to ensure that research areas are operating effectively
  • Develops and implements management and business operation training and coaching
  • Provides leadership to foster a culture in which data-informed decisions are used for continuous quality improvement; assist in measuring performance outcomes and provides guidance in improving effectiveness
  • Works with PIs and research leaders to develop fundraising/revenue generating proposals that support their research initiatives
  • Facilitates collaboration and working relationships between PIs and stakeholders (industry, supporters, advisory boards, committees)
  • Liaises with industry and institutional leaders to keep abreast of emerging trends and opportunities within research
  • Collects various reports; submits reports of invention, patent applications, research scope reports and completed projects for approvals
  • Develops and ensures appropriate internal controls are established that meet audit requirements to mitigate risk

 To be successful in this role, you will have: 

  • An undergraduate degree in Strategic Management, Business or Project Management.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience; ideally in higher education.
  • Project Management designation is an asset.
  • Designation in a quality improvement approach (Six Sigma, Lean, etc.) is desired.
  • Ability to converse with clients and build trustworthy relationships.
  • A communication style that leads to influence and influences change.
  • Ability to embrace challenges, create engagement, and ensure key priorities are set with a plan to deliver.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve by identifying creative and appropriate solutions.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.  Intermediate technical learning capabilities to learn University of Alberta (U of A) systems and databases.

In accordance with the Temporary and Administrative Staff (TAPS) agreement, this position has a term length of three years, with the possibility of renewal, offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and an annual salary range of $65,906 to $109,772.
