The Department of Biomedical Engineering is currently recruiting a Research Associate for an initial three-year term with possibility of extension.  The successful candidate will be a member in Dr. Alan Wilman’s MRI laboratory and will be overseeing and aiding his MRI research program by performing advanced research into the value of MRI methods for brain imaging.

This position will be involved in all MRI research endeavors with both supervisory and implementation roles: leading specific projects, planning new research projects, leading collaborators, performing innovative research based on the supervisor’s and own ideas, supervising trainees in the laboratory, training students and staff on data analysis and MRI methods, performing data analysis and MRI sequence design, writing research proposals and journal articles, and presenting work at conferences. The general research area is applying MRI methods to human studies, involving design and simulation of MRI methods, and computer analysis of MRI data.

Duties Include:

  • Undertake self-directed creative research in consultation with the supervisor, which includes planning research activities and providing design for a project
  • Develop new MRI methods and determine which is the most appropriate methodology in carrying out identified research goals on a Siemens Prisma and a research 4.7T system
  • Conduct or supervise data collection and analysis that will use both existing programs and require generation of new computer code based on novel ideas generated by the
    Research Associate or research team.
  • Supervise/support and lead MRI research endeavors of the supervisor and students.
  • Develop and apply MRI acquisition and image analysis methods in three ways: self-directed, leading students and helping collaborators. 
  • Fostering communication and relationships with on-campus partners
  • Assist in preparing grant proposals/applications (may be a co-applicant)
  • Participate in the writing of abstracts and research papers, the preparation of presentations for conferences, and publications.
  • Presenting research results in seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings
  • Assisting with administrative duties as required
  • Setting research program objectives (involved in the planning of future research) with the PI, defines, plans and implements research activities and research design for
    assigned projects
  • Identify potential research opportunities
  • Preparing proposals for new research initiatives, including the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals, including completing budget requests
  • Directly supervising support staff or Research Associates (Level 1)
  • Overseeing the operations of the research group, including liaising with external providers for contracts
  • Oversee the data collection process, including designing data collection protocols and standards
  • Overseeing the analysis of research results
  • Conducting quality analysis and quality assurance on research design, methodology, etc
  • Facilitate and/or coordinate project planning, execution, reporting, monitoring and evaluation
  • Set up and calibrate software/hardware and be an expert user of the technologies used

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • PhD in MRI physics or MRI engineering and a minimum of 5 years in research including methodology and project management.
  • High level of organizational management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to publish MRI research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the writing of grant applications including budgeting
  • Excellent technical problem solving skills
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience in research MRI methodology and analysis
  • Strong computer programming skills in MATLAB
  • Strong capability to program an MRI scanner (Siemens Prisma, Varian 4.7 T)
  • Excellent people and management skills are also needed to effectively manage research support  

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement with an annual salary range of $74,084 to $101,888 and offers a comprehensive benefits package at Faculty & Staff Benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
