The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is a premier academic health sciences centre, dedicated to advancing health through teaching, research and patient care.

Part of the Faculty's strategic planning efforts involve fostering a culture of innovation in health and wellness with the aim to generate transformational improvements in health and care. To do this, we have created an 'Innovation Framework' to support innovation, product development and entrepreneurship by our faculty members and trainees.

The Innovation Navigator will be responsible for management, ongoing business development (BD), and relationship management, and marketing for the JLABS POD @ ALBERTA,
located at the University of Alberta. 

Business Development

  • Develop and manage the JLABS-POD@ALBERTA initiative that will connect the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, and other researchers, entrepreneurs and health technology small business owners across Alberta to JLABS and J&J Innovation (via the national J&J Business Development person and the Director of JLABS@Canada).
  • Work directly with University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and other academic entrepreneurs and provincial health technology small business owners to understand individual and/or company R&D and commercialization needs.
  • Collaborate with JLABS@Canada to connect identified high potential companies and entrepreneurs with appropriate Johnson & Johnson personnel for mentorship.
  • Work with JLABS programming team to optimize programming activities for Alberta’s health innovation ecosystem.
  • Assist and coach entrepreneurs with application and participation in JLAB programs (e.g. Quick Fire Challenge, Inside Scoop).
  • Develop a business and sustainability plan for the JLABS-POD@ALBERTA and support this plan with the development of funding proposals to government and other agencies.
  • Develop framework and associated metrics to assess success of JLABS-POD@Alberta in collaboration with the JLABS POD Oversight Committee. Support, develop and manage budgets and milestones.
  • Develop and lead the business process for the JLABS POD Oversight Committee. Work with Chair of Oversight Committee and Director of JLABS@Canada to develop meeting agendas, follow-ups and report outs. 


  • Overall administrative management of JLABS POD operations and program activities (e.g., JLAB seminars, etc). 
  • Lead outgoing marketing and PR campaigns on behalf of JLABS in coordination with local partner marketing and communications teams 
  • Schedule calls among investigators and J&J team members
  • Manage the JLABs POD calendar 
  • Help manage IT issues
  • Communicate and work with key stakeholders 
  • Provide usage reports 
  • Answer calls and emails related to the JLABs POD
  • Support JPOD engagement activities derived from JLABS team
  • Drive awareness of JLABS/JPOD initiative
  • Organize large scale annual events, responsible for all details of events, including, but not limited to, arranging for speakers, invitations, arrangements for dignitaries, handling press, arranging catering.
  • Website/PR management for entrepreneurial programs for JPOD. Draft and publish content.
  • Distribute electronic and hardcopy newsletters, brochures, presentations, social media channels, etc.
  • Support administrative aspects of JLABS/JPOD programming: budgeting, manage/develop calendars, manage speaker logistics, ticket sales including development/delivery of e-marketing communications and schedule to ensure optimal attendance results of JLABS/JPOD events. 
  • Lead regional community engagement with onsite Licensees (portal communications, discounts, site celebrations, etc.) including tracking and sharing of Licensee progress reported in the media.
  • Manage ongoing relationships with key internal and regional external stakeholders including strategic marketing partners, trade associations, potential sponsors, and collaborators by developing mutually beneficial agreements and tracking benefits to ensure optimal results.  Lead and leverage JLABS presence at regional conferences (sponsorship, speaking engagements, event planning, advertisements, booth, speakers, etc.).
  • Administratively support JLABS POD Oversight Committee and meetings.
  • Prepare and present quarterly progress reports and an annual report to Oversight Committee

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Academic training (post-graduate preferred);experience in health and/or health research
  • Knowledge and experience in project management
  • Ability to work with research teams, committees and other groups
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication  and coaching skills
  • Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite

In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff (TAPS) Agreement, this is a 12 month position with the possibility of extension and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits with an annual salary range of $61,391 - $102,355. This competition will remain open until filled, however, the review of applicants will be begin the week of September 17th.
