The Training & Development Lead will work with Executive and Management in IST to develop, deliver and support management training initiatives within the department. One of the departments commitments in the current strategic plan is a commitment to “Grow Our People”. This resource will be fundamental in the development of skills within IST, showing commitment to employees and moving the department forward with the necessary skills to achieve their strategic objectives.

The incumbent will understand the strategic objectives and initiatives of the department and look to find opportunities to support and develop the management team and their staff to ensure success. This will include developing and delivering specific support to the leaders of IST in their skills in management including financial, human resources and leadership training. They will provide continued support to the leaders to contextualize and implement techniques learnt and apply knowledge into their management approach. The incumbent will work with managers/ supervisors to develop training and development plans for their teams, specific to the needs of each and support them in the forecasting and implementation of the training plans.

  • Needs Assessment and Training Strategy Development:  Working with the executive team, this position will develop a departmental management training strategy and oversee implementation. They will work with the senior executive to learn the culture of IST and the institution, the role the department plays as a service provider to campus and how they interact with the clients. With that knowledge, they will develop a strategy and plan for meeting the needs outlined. The incumbent will lead and assess the value of programs and make recommendation to the executive.     


  • Develop & Support Training Initiatives: This position will help develop and deliver training sessions for management in categories such as finance, human resources and leadership. The candidate will utilize personal skills and techniques as well as licensed training content and programs working with outside service providers, as required. Such activities will include:
    • Based on the gap analysis information, develop training sessions
    • Select and advise on educational methods
    • Work with team leads to assess and develop team training needs and plans for their teams, leveraging projects and impacts to skill sets in the future
    • Map out long-term training plans for teams
    • Identify cost analysis information to executive
    • Assist team leads in linking training and development for staff to performance appraisals and staff development plans
    • Develop cohorts to work through training programs together
    • Leverage team’s individual knowledge and create an ability to share that knowledge to others


  • Deliver and Facilitate Training Sessions: Working within the budget and scope identified in training assessment and plans; outsourcing or liaising with external partners as needed.
    • Perform customized training sessions for management in specific areas identified
    • Provide on-the-job coaching and support the rollout of a leadership development program within IST
    • Schedule and perform follow-up with each manager, to ensure implementation of skills gained
    • Gather feedback from trainees and trainers


  • Sustainment and Future Planning  Integrate Training Plans and link to Performance Management
    • Work with leads to integrate training plans and link to performance appraisal processes
    • Use roadmaps to focus team on goals and stay on track to achieving objectives
    • Develop review plan and timeframe with leads
    • Advise and ensure managers and team leads assess and understand the training plans
    • Provide data to executive on impact of training and initiatives undertaken (ROI, cost analysis reports)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

This position will have senior leadership training experience. They will have worked with large, complex organizations to develop, deliver and recommend training initiatives. Skills will include:

  • 5 to 8 years senior leadership/ management training experience
  • Business degree with a specialization in Human Resources or equivalent education/ experience
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Strong analytical skills to understand a complex environment and contextualize, assess needs and develop action plans accordingly
  • CPHR designation

In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff (TAPS) Agreement, this is an 18 month position with the possibility of extension and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits with an annual salary range of $61,391 - $102,355. This competition will remain open until filled, however, the review of applicants will be begin the week of September 10th.
