The Division of General Surgery, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, and the Clinical Department of Surgery, Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone is accepting applications for a clinical academic General Surgeon with training in Trauma Surgery and/or Acute Care Surgery.

The Division of General Surgery is recruiting a surgeon with a flexible start date of approximately September 1, 2019. The candidate will be expected to exhibit a strong research background, with an interest in Acute Care Surgery and Trauma. Elective and acute care coverage will be primarily based at the University of Alberta Hospital with Trauma surgery coverage at both the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital sites. 

The Division of General Surgery presently consists of 53 General Surgeons and provides service to the City of Edmonton and surrounding communities. The Division provides specialized care in all aspects of General Surgery including hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation, general surgical oncology, head and neck surgery, endocrine surgery, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive surgery. The Division of General Surgery has one of the largest training programs in General Surgery in Canada.

The successful candidate will care for surgical inpatients and outpatients, and participate in the on-call rotation supporting the University of Alberta Hospital and the Edmonton Zone, as well as referrals through a regional referral program covering Northern Alberta. The job description includes a commitment to clinical care delivery, education and research.  Remuneration is based on a fee-for service model with billing directly to Alberta Health. This individual will also take part in the undergraduate and post-graduate surgery curricula at the University of Alberta. The successful candidate will be expected to apply for a Clinical Faculty appointment in the Department of Surgery, University of Alberta. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Opportunities for further academic involvement may be considered in the future for the appropriate candidate.

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta.  The applicant must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in General Surgery or equivalent and have advanced training or significant experience in Trauma Surgery and/or Acute Care Surgery.
