Enrolment Systems & Service Innovation, within the Office of the Deputy Provost Students & Enrolment, is responsible for providing functional support of the University’s enrolment systems. ESSI is responsible for service design, improvement and innovation focused on improving the student experience through digital transformation initiatives.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Business Transformation & Service Innovation, the Business Analyst is a key member of a team of functional and systems analysts responsible for proactively meeting and exceeding the diverse needs of the University. The Business Analyst is a catalyst for new growth by leading mid to large-scale initiatives, business process re-engineering, and continual service improvement efforts for the university.

As a service-focused leader, the Business Analyst works collaboratively with campus partners in the Student Service Centre, Office of the Registrar, Colleges, Faculties, Centres of Expertise, Dean of Students, University of Alberta International, Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, Students and external partners across campus to provide

In all facets of this role, the Business Analyst endeavours to integrate and advance the University’s commitments to equity, diversity and inclusivity.


  • Analyzes business requirements originating from the University of Alberta’s strategy, business plans, and internal/external clients and translates those requirements into business processes.
  • Researches and analyzes system utilization; determines and proposes improvements.
  • Meets with stakeholders to review and document business requirements and provides options, advice or recommendations regarding business process change, system functionality or customizations/fixes required.
  • Works closely with internal and external service providers/teams to document and translate business requirements into solutions and ensures business requirements are built to stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Participates in the technical strategy and analysis stages to resolve complex issues.
  • Provides recommendations to enhance established processes and procedures.
  • Participates in defining the initial project scope and supports the different phases of project implementation.
  • Plans direct and coordinates the activities of designated projects to ensure that goals and objectives are accomplished within prescribed time frames.
  • Ensures updates and changes to business processes are reflected in training programs and material.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Related post-secondary diploma or degree in Computing Science or Management Information Systems.
    • Experience in a post-secondary environment
    • Minimum 2 years of progressing increasing responsibility in either a systems analyst or business analyst role.
    • Demonstrate analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills and ability to synthesize and clearly communicate complex findings to various stakeholders.
    • Demonstrate the ability to build relationships, communicate, influence, advocate, and negotiate with a wide variety of stakeholders.
    • Certification in a Business Analysis program certified by the International Institute of Business Analysts.
    • Can navigate ambiguity comfortably to explore creative possibilities, and demonstrate an understanding of cultural differences.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in lean six sigma and continuous improvement.
    • Experience and knowledge of change management principles, methodologies and tools. Proven organizational change management skills.
