The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS) invites applicants to apply for a contingent tenure track position of Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be offered a full-time position (1.0 FTE) with the University of Alberta. This position will be comprised of approximate 40% clinical service (including clinical teaching) and 60% academic pursuits: for example, teaching, research and administrative duties. All faculty members are expected to contribute to education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health education institutions. The Department of Emergency Medicine currently has four academic faculty, 37 residents, and 190 clinical faculty members working clinically at eight hospitals across the Edmonton Zone. These include the Grey Nuns Community Hospital, the Misericordia Community Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital/Northeast Community Health Centre, the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Strathcona Community Hospital, the Sturgeon Community Hospital, the University of Alberta Hospital, and the Westview Health Centre. The Department’s mission statement is “to optimize and advance the provision of emergency medical care through excellence in research, education, and community service.”

In addition, the Department of Emergency Medicine houses two residency training programs: the 5-year fellowship training program in Emergency Medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (CPSA; ~ 6 annually) and the 1-year certification program in Emergency Medicine from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), jointly administered with the Department of Family Medicine (~ 6 annually). Both provide ample opportunities for staff to supervise learners conducting research and educational activities. Graduate training affiliation is available through the Department of Medicine, the School of Public Health, or other Departments. 

AHS is Canada’s first and largest province-wide, fully-integrated health system, responsible for delivering health services to the over 4 million people living in Alberta, as well as to some residents of Saskatchewan, B.C. and the Northwest Territories. The Department of Emergency Medicine works closely clinically with AHS in the provision of patient services in the Edmonton Zone, as well as provincially through the Emergency Strategic Clinical Network (ESCN).

Qualifications

Interested applicants must hold an MD and must have completed specialist training in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC-EM, CCFP-EM or with equivalent Emergency Medicine specialist training or certification)   Additional research (e.g., MPH, MSc, PhD) or educational (e.g., Med, PhD) training and experience will be considered as a positive asset for this position. As this is a position that is cost-shared with Alberta Health Services, the successful applicant must also be eligible for license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
