Position Summary

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders. The successful candidate will be hired as a full-time tenured Associate Professor or Professor in the department commensurate with experience. The University of Alberta’s Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, one of three departments in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, is among the largest speech-language pathology education programs in Canada with 7 faculty members, 5 academic teaching staff, multiple sessional instructors, and 120 students. The CSD Department offers a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP), a two-year program designed to develop leaders in speech-language therapy through excellence in research, education and citizenship. The program is designed to provide students with the academic and clinical skills required to be eligible for certification through Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registration or licensure by provincial regulatory bodies.

A combined MSc/PhD program is also offered to allow a select group of highly motivated students to complete the MSc in speech-language pathology and the PhD in rehabilitation sciences within a single integrated program of study. Faculty members of the CSD department are actively involved in the MSc and PhD degree programs in Rehabilitation Science offered through the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.


Faculty members have diverse research programs in areas including developmental language disorders and phonological development in children, literacy, multilingual language development, neurogenic communication disorders, speech science, hearing science and head and neck cancer rehabilitation. The department has community connections with several health care centres in Edmonton, including the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Faculty members have close connections (e.g., cross appointments and partnerships) with research and clinical institutes such as the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine and the Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research.

The successful candidate for Chair will be a leader who can align goals and vision to strengthen the department’s outstanding educational programs, research endeavors, and community partnerships. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to engage and inspire faculty, staff, and students, communicate and make decisions in a transparent, inclusive and collaborative manner. They must be highly knowledgeable and innovative in thinking about the future of the discipline and profession of speech-language pathology and be a champion for equity, diversity, inclusivity and Indigenous initiatives. The review process takes several factors into consideration in addition to teaching, research, and service.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a relevant discipline and a strong scholarly record in teaching, research and service. They must be eligible for licensure by the professional college, the Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA), within 1 year of the position start date.
