The Department of Renewable Resources, in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, University of Alberta, Canada, invites applications for a candidate to serve as the Endowed Chair in Forest Growth & Yield. This is a tenure-track position; appointment as the Chair will be for five-year terms, renewable based on performance relative to the operating terms and objectives of the endowment. The Chair position is funded by industrial partners within the forest sector who are committed to working with the successful candidate in the development of a research program that will inform approaches to ensure sustainability of Alberta’s timber resource through developing an understanding of the impacts of climate, site, treatments, and other factors on forest growth. The research will include, for example, understanding the long-term outcomes of emerging approaches to harvest planning and silviculture. It is expected that the focus of the research program will be in Alberta, encompassing a variety of commercial forest types; e.g., areas dominated by varying mixtures of broadleaf (mainly aspen and balsam poplar) and conifer (mainly white spruce, black spruce, or lodgepole pine) tree species. Knowledge arising from the research should be incorporated into operational trials and to improvement of locally-relevant models of forest growth and yield. Through knowledge exchange, the research results will contribute to development of best practices recommendations, regulations and policy.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and post-doctoral experience in applied forest growth & yield research, or in related fields such as forest mensuration, biometrics, forest modeling, or forest management but with a specific focus on forest growth and yield. We seek candidates with a well-established record of independent research with demonstrated ability to work effectively with external partners (industry and government) and a commitment to providing scientific guidance to the forest sector. 

The successful candidate's research will complement existing strengths of the Department in forest management, tree improvement and genetics, silviculture, forest ecology, conservation biology, reclamation, and soils. It is expected that the successful candidate will proactively develop collaborative relationships with colleagues in the department, across UofA, at other institutions, and will engage with organizations in the forest sector that have a vested interest in growth and yield (e.g., Forest Growth Organization of Western Canada (FGrOW), Alberta Agriculture & Forestry, Canadian Forest Service). Applicants must be willing and able to interact with industrial and government (federal, provincial) professionals in the development, transfer and application of research that supports the goals for ecological, economic and social sustainability of forests. The successful applicant will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and actively contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching. Applicants who are Registered Professional Foresters, or who have the credentials to obtain that designation in Alberta, will be favourably considered. 

The Faculty emphasizes excellence in teaching; therefore evidence of novel approaches and interest in non-traditional teaching methods is expected. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in forest mensuration, growth & yield, biometrics, stand dynamics, forest management and related forestry courses. Effective supervision of graduate students and participation on graduate student committees is also required.
