The Director (Programs and Planning) (DPP) provides executive leadership support and assistance to the Associate Dean (Programs & Planning) (ADPP) working to advance the program and planning activities and profile of the Faculty of Engineering. The Director is involved with, and leads many aspects of graduate and undergraduate program planning and implementation and course coordination. The Director is also responsible for implementing processes to meet and monitor the Faculty of Engineering (FOE)'s mandatory accreditation requirements as stipulated by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The Director leads the improvement of the faculty-wide electronic data storage and reporting systems that form part of the faculty's continuous improvement process (CIP) requirements and maintains, analyzes, and synthesizes data and makes timely recommendations. The Director is responsible for gathering, maintaining, analyzing and synthesizing strategic data analysis for the faculty in support of strategic initiatives.


  • Working with ADPP and department Chairs is responsible for maintaining and adapting processes to maintain accreditation under CEAB procedures.
  • Plans, implements, and monitors ongoing accreditation strategy and events across the Faculty.
  • Coordinates three undergraduate course offerings in Fall, Winter, and Spring terms
  • Maintains and updates the tracking system for graduate students’ professional development hour completion. 
  • Execute and oversee the execution of strategic initiatives
  • Reviews CEAB accreditation requirements and participates in CEAB events to ensure continual Faculty compliance.
  • Responsible for the completion of accreditation reporting to Faculty and CEAB.
  • Executes yearly and six-year (or less) accreditation reporting plan. Sets timelines, milestones, and deliverables for timely completion of accreditation reports and their dissemination.
  • Communicates accreditation strategy to internal and external bodies through involvement in teaching and outreach activities.
  • Plans and supports program quality control reviews and president review committee every six years
  • Participates on Academic Planning Committee and other ad hoc academic committees to present accreditation updates.
  • Liaises with professional licensing organizations and interacts as an accreditation subject matter expert with international partners to provide advice regarding accreditation standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Faculty of Engineering undergraduate programs CIP.
  • Coordinates the development and leads the ongoing execution of an academic continuous improvement process.
  • Reviews for completeness and/or accuracy, all undergraduate program courses, graduate attributes, accreditation units, learning outcomes, to inform and support program leads to take appropriate actions as part of the faculty’s CIP.
  • Develops a local body of knowledge regarding accreditation to enable the Faculty to become a national/international accreditation authority/expert.
  • Subject matter expert on all accreditation and CIP technical projects. 
  • Advises with IT staff who design, implement, troubleshoot, enhance, and maintain the database and data integrity.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean, Programs and Planning, and Chairs to ensure the smooth management of the Faculty's Academic Planning processes. 
  • Gathers and synthesizes strategic metrics and comparators on an on-going basis for the Faculty and peer organizations in support of the University of Alberta Unit Review process. 
  • Participates, prepares documentation, presents at academic and accreditation conferences and group meetings.
  • Informs, contributes, with the Departments and units associated with FGSR, and executes on the development of a unified set of best practices for graduate programs, and graduate student professional development, and other recommendations from stakeholders and regular Faculty of Engineering Program reviews. Collaborates with department staff responsible for promoting, reviewing and coordinating graduate programs at the Faculty level.
  • Execute and oversee the execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Contributes and advises the Faculty of Engineering Academic Planning Committee, Graduate Program Committee, Physical Planning Committee, and Graduate Attribute Review Committee, as well as ad hoc committees and leads, at ADPP request, subcommittees.
  • Involved in the development and delivery of Bridge2ENGG bridging program.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An undergraduate degree in engineering, science, education or similar is mandatory; A graduate degree in a relevant discipline is an asset.
  • Experience in higher education pedagogy and leadership.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills with excellent judgment, problem solving and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in collaborative, decision-making, and high-pressure environments.
  • Strong knowledge of EDI principles and their implementation in practices and programs.
  • Experience in managing complex projects, including formal project management practices (budgeting, Gantt charts, stage gate procedures).
  • Knowledge of outcomes based pedagogy and educational assessment principles.
  • Five or more years of experience in higher education executing projects, developing proposals, reporting to sponsors and communicating planning results.
  • Demonstrated experience in student services and administration (understanding of engineering programs, graduation requirements, etc.).
  • Strong application software knowledge including MS Office, advanced features of Excel (macros, pivot tables) and search engine expertise.
  • Advanced user of complex computer software applications, including enterprise-reporting systems, reporting tools, and data warehousing.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta is a leading educational innovator. Its nine programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and consists of four departments and an additional department jointly administered with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Currently, it has over 200 Faculty Members, 4,500 undergraduate students and 1,600 graduate students.  By size, this makes it within the top 5% of Engineering Faculties in North America and one of the largest Faculties at the University of Alberta (3rd largest by undergraduate students, 4th largest by FTE professoriate, largest by graduate students). The Faculty of Engineering is a leading educational innovator.  Its nine programs are accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. The DPP’s role in securing accreditation will be continuing, working with instructors and the database, during the episodic accreditation process.  Failure to satisfactorily secure accreditation jeopardizes the Faculty’s continued existence, so the importance of this position cannot be overstated.

In terms of graduate program administration, the Director (Programs and Planning) will oversee a system that directly impacts all of our 1,600 graduate students, and the performance metrics gathered and delivered will directly impact the current $3.5M/year in GTA funding; the faculty aims to grow the graduate program significantly over the next 5 years, the DPP will be critical in ensuring the process development and meeting targets. The Faculty of Engineering has the largest graduate program on campus, with student support levels exceeding $20M/year.

This regular continuing position is in accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer agreement and offers a comprehensive benefits package, which can be viewed at Faculty & Staff Benefits, and offers an annual salary range is $64,553 to $107,593.
