CASA Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health ( and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Alberta (, in conjunction with Alberta Health Services ( invites applicants for the CASA Research Chair in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The Research Chair is a full-time contingent tenure-track professorship. This position is provided protected time for research within a full-time academic appointment with the goal to foster world-class research in Child & Adolescent mental health. The clinician will also hold a clinical appointment and will participate in clinical care of patients.

The Research Chair will lead the development of an academic and practice-focused research program in Child & Adolescent mental health designed to enhance the existing body of scientific research in the field and develop new, innovative and evidence-based interventions. The research process and the results will ensure that individuals and medical professionals in the mental health field can benefit from the findings, leading to longer lasting interventions and improved care. It is expected the Chair will work collaboratively with other research groups and centres within the province, nationally and internationally.

CASA is a community-based non-profit organization that combines clinical care, research, education, and advocacy to help transform the lives of children with mental health and addictions concerns and to strengthen family resilience and hope. CASA treats more than 4,000 children from birth to age 18 each year, along with their families. CASA provides a family-centred approach in the delivery of programs and services as well as outreach services to Central and Northern Alberta. CASA is an accredited health care organization that provides a continuum of services through 22 programs. CASA is committed to practice and service delivery innovation and provides comprehensive program evaluation.  CASA fosters change in the mental health field through the professionals we train and our commitment to continuous quality improvement, best practice and ground breaking research.

CASA advocates for children and families and drives improvement in the treatment of children’s mental health and youth addictions. 

Candidates must have an MD, preference will be given to MD/PhD in an area relevant to psychiatric research and must have at least five years of appropriate experience relevant to clinical translational research in psychiatry. Preference will be given to clinician scientists who are currently working in Child & Adolescent psychiatry. All candidates should have an excellent record of research accomplishment, including success in competing for external awards at the national level and the ability to mentor research trainees effectively.

The successful applicants will have excellent opportunities to develop collaborative interactions within and beyond the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, in the context of the current development of a funded new Translational Research Institute for Neuroscience & Mental Health. Research in the Department of Psychiatry includes biological and psychosocial aspects of psychiatry and related neurological disorders and includes clinical translational activity in anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis and addiction in children, youth and adults. Research engagement in the Department includes pharmacogenomic, genetic and neuroimaging studies and we enjoy an active on-campus collaboration on machine learning and data-mining with the Alberta Innovates Centre for Machine Learning ( The Department has excellent analytical facilities for basic and clinical research in neurochemistry and psychopharmacology and enjoys extensive collaborative interactions with the Peter S Allen Neuroimaging Centre, with well-supported leading-edge MRI (including human MRS and fMRI & DTI at up to 4.7T) and emerging PET/MRI capabilities.

Researchers in the Department access competitive funding through national (Canadian Institutes of Health Research: CIHR ) and provincial (Alberta Innovates Health Solutions: AIHS ) funding agencies. Competitive funding is also available through the programs of the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative ( led by the Norlien Foundation, and the Alberta Centre for Child, Family & Community Research ( Partner organizations include, The Institute of Health Economics (, The Women & Children’s Health Research Institute ( and Campus Alberta Neuroscience (  Current engagement of the Department in national research initiatives includes Hub participation in the Canadian Depression Research Intervention Network (CDRIN) and engagement in the development of the Canadian Research Network in Substance Misuse (a CIHR Institute for Neuroscience, Mental Health & Addiction initiative). At the provincial level, researchers in the Department are working closely with Alberta Health Services (AHS) in the context of the Strategic Clinical Networks (SCN []), and there is excellent alignment between the SCNs and the priorities of the provincial health research funding agency (AIHS).

The Department has an excellent suite of educational programs, including well-established M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in psychiatry and participation in well-established graduate programs in Neuroscience. The Department has an excellent and well-established residency training program in psychiatry, with Royal College accredited sub-specialty training programs in child & adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, and a new sub-specialty training program in geriatric psychiatry that has received provisional Royal College approval.
