The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alberta is seeking applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Control Systems, with an emphasis on Mechatronics.  Applications are invited from candidates with demonstrated impact, originality, and continued promise in areas related to control systems and mechatronics as evidenced by the quality of their scientific contributions and their short- and long-term research goals.  Successful candidates will be expected to supervise graduate students and must also demonstrate commitment to teaching in their fields of expertise at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Exceptional candidates with demonstrated expertise and continuing interest in the application of machine learning to control systems may be considered for an appointment under the Canadian CIFAR AI (CCAI) Chairs Program (https://www.cifar.ca/ai/pan-canadian-artificial-intelligence-strategy) in concert with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (https://www.amii.ca).

This call for applications is part of a thrust within the Faculty of Engineering to expand upon our existing team in controls and mechatronics, as well as extend our expertise in applications of machine learning.  The University of Alberta is home to world-renowned researchers in control theory and its applications who enjoy an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment for their research across several departments, including Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, and Computing Science.  Ongoing research projects include investigation of fundamentals of control theory and the application of control methods to industrial challenges in process control, robotics, and automotive engineering.

Candidates must have earned a PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related area. Hiring preference will be given to candidates with impactful publications in high-quality, reputable, peer-reviewed journals, conferences, books and book chapters.  In addition, preference will be given to candidates providing evidence of established and respected teaching skills, and who have a demonstrated record of service at the departmental, institutional, national, and/or international levels.  Successful candidates will also be required in due course within six years to become licensed professional engineers in the Province of Alberta.
