This Academic Teaching Position (ATS) reports to the Chair, Department of Pharmacology. The ATS position will have a length of 12 months with the possibility of extension depending upon future funding. The time allocation for this position may be modified annually in consultation with the Department Chair. It will initially be 80% teaching, including course coordination and 20% other administration/service duties. The ATS is expected to assist in the efficient organization, development and implementation of all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate educational activities of the Department of Pharmacology, as assigned by the Department Chair.

Teaching / Administration:

The ATS is expected to contribute to the educational mission of the Department of Pharmacology. This will involve the course coordination and presentation of lectures in the undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the Department of Pharmacology. This full-time teaching position will involve teaching in at least 5 full 3 credit courses, as assigned by the Department Chair, per full academic year Jul 1 – Jun 30 (Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer term). Teaching and Administration duties include but are not limited to:

Teaching/Course Coordination

  • Teaches at least 4 full 3-credit courses during Fall and Winter term
  • Teaches at least 1 full course over spring and summer as assigned by the Chair
  • Coordinates all fully taught courses
  • Designs, prepares and reviews exams for all fully taught courses
  • Evaluates student performances and assigns grades
  • Advisor for students in the courses being coordinated and/or fully taught
  • Teaches in other Pharmacology courses when required and as assigned by the Chair

Administration:

  • Investigates similar courses at other Universities to remain current and to maintain a high level of teaching quality
  • Attends courses and workshops to improve and develop teaching skills
  • Coordinates participation of other Pharmacology or Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Lecturers in the courses coordinated if required. The requirement of participation of other Lecturers to be discussed with the Department Chair.
  • Creates and develops new Pharmacology courses, online and class based.
  • Prepares and supports the development of supplementary teaching materials for Pharmacology teaching

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • PhD in Pharmacology or related doctoral degree
  • Excellent teaching skills and proven track record
  • Knowledge of University of Alberta policies and regulations in all aspects of instruction and course administration is an asset
  • Experience in the creation and design of courses and examinations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with students, faculty and office staff
