Targeting mitochondria in cancer, cardiovascular disease and induction of hibernation in human hearts and lungs; a translational multifaceted and multidisciplinary research program

Two positions for post-doctoral fellows are now open in the Michelakis lab

Dr. Michelakis is a Cardiologist and translational researcher, Vice Chair (research) of the Department of Medicine and a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Applied and Molecular Mitochondrial Medicine. He is funded by several large federal grants (including a Foundation scheme CIHR grant, an NSERC grant, a New Frontiers in Research grant and a Heart and Stroke Foundation grant) and is seeking 2 postdoctoral fellows. His work ranges from advanced molecular biology to animal research to early phase clinical trials in cardiovascular disease and cancer. He publishes in high impact journals like Cell, Cancer Cell, Cell Metabolism, JCI, PNAS, Science Translational Medicine, Lancet, Circulation and Circulation Research. His current projects include discoveries leading to new metabolism (mitochondria) – based treatments of cancer, heart failure, vascular biology (pulmonary hypertension); the molecular regulation of translation during stress, as well as an exciting new and very novel program on the hibernation of human lungs and hearts that studies hibernating snails, human cells and human organs obtained at transplant surgery. His lab has dedicated equipment funded by 3 large CFI grants over the years, including a high resolution confocal microscope. He has 2 large labs in the AHFMR building with dedicated offices and additional space in the Katz building.

He has previously received a mentor award from the FOMD. In 2018, Circulation Research named him a “Leader in Cardiovascular Sciences”. He was the first Canadian to be included in this short list of international leaders and his work and educational philosophy was featured in a dedicated paper in Circulation Research:
