The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology in partnership with Alberta Health Services, invites applications for a Cardiologist with expertise in disorders in the Elderly to be based at the Mazankowski Heart Institute / University of Alberta. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

The University of Alberta's Division of Cardiology is an integral part of the Department of Medicine and Alberta Health Services The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, a state of the art facility that provides secondary and tertiary cardiac care services for the City of Edmonton, Northern Alberta, and parts of British Columbia, Yukon, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and portions of Saskatchewan. The Mazankowski Heart Institute is the only heart institute in the country providing care for both pediatric and adult patients. Other defining features include a leading Systems of Care program for Acute Coronary Syndromes, one of the largest Cardiac Transplant/Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs in the Canada, the largest Western Canadian Adult Congenital Heart Disease program, highly successful Pulmonary Hypertension program and a large imaging research center (ABACUS), which is available for clinical and basic science research. With successful Interventional Cardiology, ever increasing Structural and Surgical programs, an increasing number of elderly patients with multiple comorbidities are undergoing high risk procedures. The successful applicant will join a group of over 34 cardiologists.

The successful candidate will have an MD degree, or equivalent.  He or she will have specialist certification in Cardiology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)

Key accountabilities of the Cardiology Clinician Investigator will include but will not be limited to Outpatient clinics, Inpatient service, Emergency Triage, and equitable share of Division of Cardiology undergraduate and postgraduate teaching responsibilities in addition to a significant research portfolio. 

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, and offers a comprehensive benefits package.  

Preference will be given to individuals with training and expertise in  areas which pertain to elderly patients that cover the spectrum of palliative care, frailty, risk stratification, rehabilitation, appropriateness of pharmacologic and invasive therapies and end of life issues. Research will make up a 30-40 % FTE component.

Remuneration will be based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
