We have partnered with Pekarsky & Co. to conduct the search for a University Secretary. The University Secretary will report directly to the President, but will also functionally be accountable to the Chair of the Board of Governors. The University Secretary has overall responsibility for the University Governance Unit, which involves providing leadership and expertise to ensure the effective operation and administration of the university’s bi-cameral system of governance. The successful candidate will serve as the university’s most senior advisor and counselor on governance related issues and the associated legislative and administrative policy and procedures. The University Secretary also oversees the Judiciary branch of university governance, which administers the final level of student appeals under various university policies.

We are seeking a collaborative and strategic governance leader with:

  • An undergraduate degree, ideally relating to governance, policy, law, public policy, and/or administration, although a graduate or law degree (LLB or Juris Doctor) is preferred
  • Extensive experience working with governance bodies (minimum of 10 years), with at least 5 years in a management-level position
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Interpretation of statutes, policies, and procedures
    • Experience in drafting technical documents and resolutions
    • Detailed knowledge and understanding of meeting procedural rules
  • A demonstrated ability to lead, inspire and coach a high-functioning team
  • A sophisticated understanding of governance concepts and the roles of university governance bodies and of their secretariats.
  • The ability to recognize and advise on the potential impact of decisions on governance bodies, administrators, staff members and the related effect on the work environment or university policies and procedures
