We are currently seeking an inclusive leader with a strong focus on service to take on our newly created role of Director of Continuing Education. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Online and Continuing Education, the Director, Continuing Education (CE) will oversee the support hub responsible for supporting the development and delivery of not-for-credit continuing education programs and courses. Direct reports include a team of up to 6 individuals supporting program development, maintenance, and delivery.

The Director will lead a diverse team of business and education professionals and collaborate closely with other academic support units to support the development and delivery of CE. Under the envisioned business model, faculties will lead identification of course/program opportunities and will lead academic content development. The role of the CE Hub is to facilitate and coordinate resources and services to support development and delivery - from instructional design, IT, enrolment management, pedagogical support, to marketing and promotion. The CE hub is directly responsible for providing portfolio and project management for program development and delivery, including working with faculties to identify and pursue opportunities. The hub is also directly responsible for external stakeholder engagement (industry, government and others), for developing and managing contracts, and for marketing and promoting continuing education offerings. In addition, the hub effectively partners with other service units to coordinate other support services (notably the Registrar, which manages enrolment, with External Relations, which supports marketing and branding, and with the faculties, which lead academic content development; and the Centre for Teaching and Learning for developing the program materials and instructor support).

Responsibilities Include:

  • Oversees the support unit responsible for supporting the development and delivery of CE programs and courses
  • Works with stakeholders across the university to develop and support an integrated approach to non-credit certificates and credentials under the university’s existing frameworks
  • Works with academic faculties to identify and prioritize programs and courses for development, subject to an institutional prioritization framework
  • Works with relevant units to analyze data associated with student success, equity gaps, and enrollment trends in online and hybrid courses; use data to enhance and continually update strategic priorities
  • Establishes and maintains the presence of U of A in the CE market locally provincially, and beyond
  • Ensures consistently high quality courses, student experience, instructor supports, and marketing and branding across the portfolio of CE offerings
  • Increases the impact and reach of CE offerings, balanced with optimizing lifelong learner engagement, meeting employer and industry needs, and supporting access
  • Manages, leads, and mentors staff to ensure delivery of effective and timely goals and results. Adjusts staff priorities and responsibilities as needed to position the office for optimal success
  • Supports the AVP in management of external partner contracts
  • Works closely with partners in External Relations to develop and implement a marketing and promotion strategy in support of enrolment growth and brand development

To be successful in this position, the incumbent will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelors degree required, Masters or other advanced degree preferred
  • Total of 7 to 10 years, comprising progressively senior roles in an education service environment and other relevant experience in progressively senior roles in other sectors outside education
  • A variety of educational preparation and experiences will be relevant to this position including but not limited to  business development, educational and program design, online or distance education or administration, adult education
  • Formal and demonstrated education and/or experience in equity, diversity, and inclusivity, with non-oppressive education, and instructor development desired
  • Knowledge of market trends and best practices in continuing education 
  • Demonstrated ability to support implementation of successful academic initiatives
  • Entrepreneurial ability to develop and grow new market offerings
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to achieve a successful business model
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and leadership in both managerial and educational matters
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and tight deadlines while working effectively in a team environment

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $71,889 to $119,809.
