Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment (HRHSE), the Director of Employee and Labour Relations ensures the services and advice offered by the Employee and Labour Relations team are supportive of the strategic goals of the University of Alberta. They will focus on standardizing employee and labour relations processes, deliver consistent and reliable advice with respect to collective agreement interpretation, ensure ongoing training of Employee and Labour Relation Officers and HR Partners and continually increase employee and labour relations expertise within the institute.

Some key responsibilities include: Ensuring an aligned and consistent academic and non-academic labour relations strategy across portfolios, overseeing and advising Employee and Labour Relations Officers to provide advice to management and senior management on various labour relations and human resources management issues, recommending strategic plans to the Associate Vice-President, HRHSE for the Employee and Labour Relations team, developing the bargaining strategy for relevant collective agreement negotiations, acting as a labour relations and employment law subject matter expert within the Employee and Labour Relations centre of expertise, managing relevant labour arbitrations, and liaising with external legal counsel.

Required qualifications and expertise include a university degree in Law, Labour Relations, or a related field, a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible labour relations experience, including experience in a management/leadership role, ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision and cope with a heavy workload, and proven experience managing grievance procedures and managing settlements.
