The University of Alberta (UofA) is seeking an ambitious, service-oriented, client-focused, collaborative, strategic leader to join Human Resource, Health, Safety & Environment (HRHSE) in the role of Director, HR Service Partnerships. Reporting to the Associate Vice-President (HRHSE), you will exercise high autonomy and accountability while operating in a fast-paced, demanding environment and provide direct leadership to a management team responsible for approximately 30-35 professionals within the HR Service Partners unit. In collaboration with other Human Resource centers of expertise and Shared Services, the Director is accountable for fostering collaborative relationships, leading and delivering on strategic initiatives, managing a large breadth of client services, and driving forward-thinking change by modeling the HR service culture.

As a Director, you will build and exemplify collaborative relationships, unite and integrate your unit with other service areas and deliver value-added services to the university’s leaders, faculty and staff. To be successful in this role, you will share our core HR values, be a collaborative team player, demonstrate your commitment to service excellence, be an engaging leader and hold yourself and others accountable. You will identify solutions for systemic and recurring issues by actively listening, gathering, interpreting, synthesizing and evaluating information from the partnership team, the team’s clients and the University community.

To excel as a highly effective leader, the Director, HR Service Partnerships will:

  • develop, lead, guide, coach and mentor a team of diverse professionals responsible for delivering client-focused, strategic and proactive services and solutions in multiple human resource functions and best practice including: strategic HR advice, collective agreement and HR policy/procedure administration, employee relations, talent attraction, learning and development, organizational planning, change management, performance and attendance management, career development, conflict of interest, compensation, succession and workforce planning;
  • create an environment that encourages innovation and enables change;
  • ensure your team is proactively addressing client needs while bridging relationships with the other specialist or operational HR units;
  • foster collaborative relationships and partnership with leaders across the University to ensure strategic, customer-centered services in a cohesive and effective manner;
  • provide input into organizational initiatives that align university and functional needs and contribute to the successful achievement of the HR and University vision, mission and goals;
  • partner with centers of expertise to develop and implement new solutions, programs and policy in response to client needs;
  • develop and maintain guidelines, policies, procedures, practices, templates and tools to provide consistency in service delivery and business continuity;
  • oversee HR partnerships service delivery, develop measurable metrics and implement continuous improvement practices to ensure responsive services and high client satisfaction;
  • demonstrate persuasive, engaging, clear and credible communication to gain support and commitment in varied situations from a wide variety of audiences;
  • stay abreast of operational and legislative changes and assess impacts to the broader HR community; and
  • demonstrate exemplary leadership behavior and foster collaboration throughout the entire partnership service team.

Desired Skills and Expertise:

  • Post-secondary degree in business administration, social sciences, human resource management, labour relations, industrial relations, employment law or related fields. A CPHR designation is an asset.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience with demonstrated examples of successful client service delivery and change management, preferably within a post-secondary and/or public sector unionized environment.
  • Broad generalist human resources experience at a senior level is required.
  • Demonstrated experience providing exemplary client services, preferably within a complex decentralized multi-stakeholder work environment.
  • A drive to improve culture in a changing landscape, embrace challenges, create engagement and ensure key priorities are set with a proactive plan to deliver.
  • A communication style that leads to influence and inspires change; ability to converse with clients and build trustworthy relationships.
  • Proven ability in project management, managing multiple priorities, continuous improvement and delivering on critical initiatives.
  • A confident and exemplary leader who can navigate ambiguity and contribute to the future success of HR in partnership with their fellow directors, managers and the AVP.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Alberta labour statutes and regulations along with post-secondary/public-sector administrative and governance processes is desired.

In accordance with the Handbook of Terms and Conditions of Employment for Management and Professional Staff (Excluded), this position is a full-time continuing appointment and offers an annual salary commensurate with qualifications and experience and a comprehensive benefits package.
