This position, covering for a maternity leave, has an expected end date of July 31, 2019 and is located at our downtown Enterprise Square location.

The Office of Advancement seeks an excellent writer and communicator to support fundraising efforts for the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR). The Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations works to establish long-term partnerships and strengthen existing relationships with the corporate and foundation sectors. Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, the Grant Writer is responsible for developing proposals, letters of inquiry, prospectuses, concept papers, reports and other materials with the goal of securing and stewarding corporate and foundation philanthropic support.


  • Writes and reviews drafts of proposals, including project narratives, budget, and other supporting documentation, in a timely manner to meet grant application deadlines
  • Collaborates with faculty and other administrators on interdisciplinary research grants and initiatives supporting academic programs
  • Interviews faculty, donors, senior administrators and students as necessary to gather information and data
  • Assists with faculty workshops on sources of external funding and provides information about grant writing to individual faculties, programs, and departments
  • Develops online resources and tools to assist faculties, programs and departments in grant writing
  • Drafts, prepares, writes and submits grant proposals, requests and letters of inquiry to foundations and corporations
  • Maintains a schedule for all team grant writing/proposal and report(s) deadlines
  • Complies with all grant requests and reporting by foundations and corporations
  • Helps to compile progress reports to existing funders
  • Writes online stories about gifts from donors
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested


  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field is required; Post graduate degree is desirable
  • 1-5 years of experience working in higher education to write and secure foundation grants or developing funding proposals or related experience is required
  • Has an understanding of foundation and corporate grant guidelines
  • Possesses extraordinary attention to detail
  • Is highly motivated, creative, proactive, team-oriented and resourceful
  • Ability to conduct interviews with senior administrators, key donors, and faculty members 
  • Ability to articulate the University of Alberta’s value proposition to key stakeholders with passion and energy
  • Familiarity with philanthropic foundations is considered an asset
