The Research Assistant will work on various studies in support of the primary care program of research in the Department of Family Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Neil Drummond, the Capital Health Chair in Primary Care Research. This position also has a working relationship with Dr. Andrew Cave (Department of Family Medicine) and Dr. Sue Ross (Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology) and reports to each of them on project-specific matters.

Duties

  • Provides research design and research methodology support and contribute to research protocol development
  • Assists with writing research grant proposals/applications and coordinating the grant submission process
  • Assists with the preparation of documents for ethics submission (study information letters, consents, study instruments, protocols, study progress updates)
  • Conducts literature reviews using PubMed and/or the gray literature
  • Conducts data collection (qualitative/quantitative), interviews, surveys, chart reviews and participant recruitment
  • Performs data processing – database development, data entry, cleaning and validation
  • Adheres to ethical and FOIPP principles in managing confidential research data
  • Conducts statistical data analysis using STATA/SAS/SPSS computer software
  • Performs qualitative data analysis using NVivo/ATLAS.ti
  • Provides updates to the Principal Investigator on study progress and prepare study progress reports
  • Attends and participates in research project meetings
  • Assists in producing dissemination materials such as conference presentations, abstracts, posters, educational materials, and other forms of knowledge transfer and exchange resources based on the research findings
  • Contributes to the content and writing of research manuscripts for scientific publication
  • Presents research findings at conferences
  • Performs research-related administrative tasks as required for research project implementation/completion (e.g. prepare correspondence, email, fax; arrange meetings; record meeting minutes; etc.)
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in the health sciences, social sciences or related disciplines; Master’s degree preferred
  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis, equivalent to Biostatistics II
  • Knowledge of data analysis software (SPSS/SAS/STATA; NVivo/ATLAS.ti)
  • Skilled in the use and application of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of research design methodologies employed in health research
  • Excellent prioritization, organization and multi-tasking skills
  • Proficiency in scientific writing
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Previous experience conducting primary care research is an asset
