This position has a term length of 10 months with the possibility of extension.

The Greenhouse Research Assistant will provide research support for the Resilient Forests (RES-FOR) LSARP project team in the greenhouse. All support/work will be directly related to the research project Resilient Forests (RES-FOR): Climate, Pests and Policy-Genomic Applications and will be focused on assisting postdoctoral fellows (PDFs) with greenhouse work/research and collecting tissue samples for DNA extraction. Examples of Greenhouse/Lab work will include: potting the seedlings, watering the trees, helping set up greenhouse experiment, collecting tissue samples for DNA extraction, helping with gas exchange measurements, helping collect samples for chemical analysis, helping with data entry, scanning needle samples as required and, assisting with harvesting the experiment. 

Duties

  • Helps establish and maintain the experiment trees in the greenhouse: potting, labeling, watering etc. according to the specifications provided by Project Investigators and their PDFs
  • Collects samples from predetermined trees
  • Help PDFs obtain their samples and measurements as instructed
  • Documents data collection as instructed
  • Scans and measures collected samples using a STD4800 Epson Scanner calibrated for image analysis with Regent Instruments Software such as WinSEEDLE, WinFOLIA and WinDENDRO as required
  • Responsible for the collection, preparation and transport of plant and tree samples as instructed
  • Performs data entry and maintenance of Excel spreadsheets or other selected software
  • Performs general clerical activities (filing, photocopying etc.)
  • Performs other duties as directed

Qualifications

  • Related postsecondary education in biological, forestry, conservation sciences or natural resources preferred; minimum High School Diploma supplemented with relevant coursework 
  • 1-2 years of previous experience involving greenhouse experiments and tree improvement programs
  • Basic computer and software skills, (e.g. Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License strongly preferred
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment; willingness to take initiative and direction
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
