Reporting to the Director, Digital Analytics, the Digital Analyst plays a key role in collecting, analyzing and reporting on data from hundreds of web projects for University web systems and websites, digital learning initiatives, the University mobile app and email marketing initiatives. The position will be responsible for implementation, analysis and generation of reports and recommendations to drive successful digital marketing efforts.  Continuing education is required to maintain proficiency.


  • Determines analytics requirements for projects and proposes solutions using current tracking and reporting programs
  • Researches, codes for, tests, and implements best practices for quantitative and qualitative data tracking methods and in reporting methods, including published, dashboard and mobile versions
  • Designs the code structure for collecting custom data using Google Tag Manager with Google Analytics and third party tools
  • Programs and builds databases as needed for collection, analysis and reporting using Microsoft SQL Server and other database tools
  • Analyzes data and develops reports and reporting methods based on stakeholder project requirements using current analytics tools, Tableau, Microsoft Excel, SPSS and related programs
  • Designs and implements reporting dashboards for stakeholders to use to monitor success metrics
  • Works with communicators, administrators and developers to review and interpret current analytics and recommend further courses of actions
  • Creates, produces and distributes/automates regular reports
  • Provides analysis and recommendations based on reports and data from all analytics tools
  • Actively seeks and collects marketing and benchmarking data that supports the business processes/outcomes of the University’s digital strategy
  • Collects data and maintains ongoing peer benchmarking studies related to advancement
  • Provides in depth analysis and recommendations to stakeholders, communicators and administrators based on data collected
  • Creates presentations to key stakeholders groups
  • Codes complex data collection scripts using JavaScript, .NET, SQL, Python, R
  • Consults with stakeholders to create and manage Google Analytics accounts for UAlberta sites


  • The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Business, Math/Statistics or Computer Science; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered; minimum related postsecondary education
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a digital marketing role with a focus on the collection and analysis of large data sets, complex information management systems; experience in a complex post-secondary, financial or public sector environment preferred
  • 3 or more years of experience in implementing analytics and best practices in data collection and reporting; experience with websites and/or web applications for mobile devices preferred
  • 3 or more years of experience using Google Analytics; 1 or more years of using Google Tag Manger
  • Expert knowledge and experience with Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL and other relational/non-relational databases
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Tableau Desktop and Server
  • Advanced knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, CSS, JavaScript frameworks and JavaScript debugging and optimization tools      
  • Experience with A/B and Multivariate testing 
  • Experience creating reports using Tableau, Microsoft Excel, other reporting software preferred
  • Expertise with a variety of analytical and database software, including Excel, statistical analysis and forecasting programs (e.g. SPSS, SAS, Crystal Ball, Forecast Pro), and presentation software is an asset
  • Experience working in an Agile development environment (Scrum) is an asset
  • Experience working with Content Management Systems, web analytics tools/software and with Google AdWords preferred
