The University of Alberta Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic (GSSMC) is a centre of excellence in the provision of care to individuals suffering from active lifestyle injuries, and care that promotes healthy active lifestyles. The Clinic leaders, administrative staff, and service providers support the fast-paced growth required for the Clinic to position itself as a leader in teaching, research, and patient care.

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Managing Board of the GSSMC, the Executive Director (ED) is a business-minded professional with oversight of all clinic operations and provides leadership in policy development; public relations and marketing; and works with the Office Administrator for financial and human resource planning. In conjunction with GSSMC Board and senior leadership, the ED applies complex business acumen to successfully implement strategic planning initiatives along with the Office Administrator to ensure the successful day to day clinic operations and the achievement of GSSMC’s clinical, academic and research mandates.


  • Advises the Dean, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and the GSSMC Board on strategic issues pertaining to GSSMC
  • Provides administrative direction and sound business best practices to improve clinical services to internal and external stakeholders by recommending and implementing change, communicating Clinic vision, assessing human resource needs, and participating in short and long term planning and budgeting, and public relations
  • Keeps the Office Administrator informed about any changes in items related to finances, and other business practices such as approval of change orders, changes in contracts, purchase orders, and performance reviews as they relate to the GSSMC
  • Works with the Office Administrator to ensure maximum efficiency in the day to day running of the clinic
  • Works with the Research Director and Education Directors to coordinate clinical implementation of research and education projects, as well as dissemination of results and knowledge translation
  • Works with members of the Operations Advisory Committee as chair to develop and implement cost effective service delivery models
  • Develops long term strategic and business plans for the advancement of the Clinic in areas of service, research, and teaching
  • Ensures existing and emerging Clinic programs, policies, and procedures foster best practice in delivery
  • Assumes a leadership role in any contract negotiations with service providers, University departments, and outside agencies
  • Ensures the financial self sufficiency of the clinic and overseeing the administration and financial operations of the Clinic in consultation with the Office Administrator and Academic Clinic Director
  • Coordinates reviews of third party contracts as dictated by University policy
  • Liaises with the relevant Health Authority, the Workers’ Compensation Board, and third party payers in securing of innovative funding arrangements in support of clinical service delivery
  • Serves as the Clinic’s liaison to regional, provincial, and national organizations/contracting agencies to maximize the Clinic as a centre of excellence relative to its mandate
  • Establishes and maintains a professional rapport with other health care professionals both within and outside the Clinic


  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field; MBA preferred
  • 5 to 10 years of (progressively responsible) management experience working in a clinical environment with a focus on strategic business practices
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working and supervising in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of current and emerging legislation, policy reform and practice trends pertaining to the delivery of health care in the Province of Alberta
  • Strong business acumen with proven knowledge of accounting and HR best practices in a health care setting with working knowledge of relevant employment and Human Rights legislation
  • Proven talent in being creative, innovative, and strategically focussed by articulating service delivery models, clinical care pathways, and/or clinical research ideas and ability to deliver them
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with health care professionals at all organizational levels
  • An active listener with critical thinking and problem solving skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to be agile and adaptable to work independently and effectively in a very demanding, fast-paced setting with the ability to prioritize tasks, as required
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong proficiency with technology and automated systems / software including PeopleSoft, MS Office, Google Applications and/or in-house software (as required)
  • Knowledge of relevant U of A policies and procedures considered an asset

This position may involve hours outside the regular 8:00am-4:00pm time frame.
