The University of Alberta Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic (GSSMC) is a centre of excellence in the provision of care to individuals suffering from active lifestyle injuries, and care that promotes healthy active lifestyles. The Clinic leaders, administrative staff and service providers support the fast-paced growth required for the Clinic to position itself as a leader in teaching, research, and patient care.

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Managing Board of the GSSMC, the Executive Director (ED) is the Clinic’s senior administrator. In conjunction with GSSMC Board and senior leadership, the ED implements strategic planning to ensure the successful day to day running of the clinic and the achievement of the Clinic’s clinical, academic and research mandates. The ED has oversight of all clinic operations and provides leadership in policy development; financial and human resource planning; and public relations and marketing.


Responsibilities

  • Advises the Dean, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and the GSSMC Board on strategic issues pertaining to GSSMC
  • Provides administrative direction to improve clinical services to internal and external stakeholders by recommending and implementing change, communicating Clinic vision, assessing human resource needs, and participating in short and long term planning and budgeting
  • Works with the Research Director and Education Directors to coordinate clinical implementation of research projects, as well as dissemination of results and knowledge translation
  • Works with members of the Operations Advisory Committee to develop and implement cost effective service delivery models
  • Develops long term plans for the advancement of the Clinic in areas of service, research, and teaching
  • Ensures existing and emerging Clinic programs, policies, and procedures foster best practice in delivery
  • Assumes a leadership role in contract negotiations with University departments and outside agencies
  • Ensures the financial self sufficiency of the clinic and overseeing the administration and financial operations of the Clinic
  • Coordinates reviews of third party contracts as dictated by University policy
  • Liaises with the relevant Health Authority, the Workers’ Compensation Board, and third party payers in securing of innovative funding arrangements in support of clinical service delivery
  • Serves as the Clinic’s liaison to regional, provincial, and national organizations/contracting agencies to maximize the Clinic as a centre of excellence relative to its mandate
  • Establishes and maintains a professional rapport with other health care professionals both within and outside the Clinic

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field; MBA preferred
  • 5 to 10 years of clinical experience combined with proven leadership, preferably in a health care setting and progressive administrative responsibility
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with proven ability to work effectively within a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of current and emerging legislation, policy reform and practice trends as pertains to the delivery of health care in the Province of Alberta
  • Accounting knowledge and its application to health care setting
  • Ability to be creative, innovative, and strategic in the development of service delivery models, clinical care pathways, and clinical research ideas
  • The ability to work collaboratively with health care professionals
  • Possess active listening, critical thinking, problem solving skills, excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting, prioritizing tasks, as demanded by the situation
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of U of A policies and procedures is an asset
  • Knowledge of U of A business applications (e.g. PeopleSoft) is an asset

In accordance with the Administrative Professional Officer agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and an annual salary range of $67,304 to $112,168 effective July 1, 2017.
