About the Position:

Reporting to the Director, Entrepreneur Development, this position creates, executes, and evaluates a variety of programs to inspire, foster, and nurture entrepreneurship. The Entrepreneur Development (ED) group is a core program of TEC Edmonton with the goal of fostering and nurturing entrepreneurship within the University and the greater Edmonton region. The Program Manager, Entrepreneur Development delivers ED's program objectives by demonstrating effective leadership, interpersonal skills, and extensive knowledge of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This position will enable TEC Edmonton to reach a greater number of entrepreneurs by increasing awareness not only of TEC Edmonton but also to the allure of entrepreneurship and how to build technology-based businesses to foster a more vibrant entrepreneurial community.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops and performs community outreach presentations to different entrepreneurial communities at the University of Alberta, at partner organizations, as well as in the greater Edmonton region as required
  • Provides entrepreneurs and inventors expert and timely guidance to the pertinent services available in the Edmonton Regional Innovation Network to best meet their individual needs
  • Collaborates with regional service providers to complement and enhance entrepreneurial capacity building
  • Works closely with other TEC Edmonton departments to provide end-to-end service of the company growth continuum
  • Performs gap analysis to identify typical challenges entrepreneurs face
  • Identifies pertinent topics for the entrepreneurs and seeks expert speakers to present on those topics
  • Collaborates with the program directors and partners to ensure the expectations of industry sponsors and other strategic partners are fulfilled
  • Develops and executes the delivery of program sessions for entrepreneurs, innovators, and University researchers
  • Collaborates with TEC Edmonton’s Marketing and Communications group to develop promotional materials and create awareness for programs and events
  • Analyzes feedback forms to determine and address the needs of the entrepreneurs
  • Identifies the entrepreneur’s stage of development or unmet needs and connect them with the appropriate service provider
  • Recommends a high-level commercialization model/strategy for researchers, inventors, and entrepreneurs who are considering starting a company
  • Identifies and connects entrepreneurs with partners and subject matter experts
  • Introduces entrepreneurs to funding agencies and other external organizations
  • Documents program activity outcomes to ensure compliance with funder reporting requirements
  • Collects and maintains metrics on the different programs
  • Monitors and evaluates monthly program results and data collected from feedback for continuous improvement
  • Oversees the TEC Innovation District TEC Launch Program, including recruitment of companies, delivery of programs and events, and keeping current with companies needs and issues
  • Mentors and assists entrepreneurs in the grant application process for the Alberta Enterprise Incubator program


  • Degree in Business Administration or equivalent; MBA preferred
  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in working with entrepreneurs in both health and non-health sectors
  • Ability to understand the challenges of starting a new business to effectively assess business needs and skill set gaps of entrepreneurs and companies and able to provide strategic business advice regarding new company development
  • Proven knowledge of different types of business models, business plan development, market research and analysis, and early stage financing
  • Proven knowledge of technology commercialization process and Alberta’s innovation system
  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships with other service providers, consultants, funding agencies and industry associations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong public speaking and presentation skills
  • Strong computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Power Point and graphics programs
  • Strong execution and project management skills with proven analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, be well organized and manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Possess high emotional intelligence (EQ) with a positive attitude, creative, passionate about entrepreneurship and self-starting
  • Effective independent decision making, problem solving and prioritization skills
  • Experience with Liquid Planner and Highrise software would be an asset
  • Willingness to work on occasional evenings and weekends to facilitate events

In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of renewal, offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary commensurate with education and experience.
