The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in discovery research in maternal/perinatal health. The department is home to research groups with world-class reputations in the area of preterm birth, preeclampsia and other maternal complications that lead to chronic disease processes in mother and/or child. The emphasis is on basic mechanisms of disease along with development of new risk predictors or novel methods for prevention or treatment.  This is an exciting position ready to be filled by a researcher in the early stages of their career who will build on the health innovation momentum in Alberta by developing a transformative and innovative research program. The goal of the research portfolio is expected to optimize maternal and infant health outcomes to reduce the risk for lifelong chronic disease. The successful applicant’s research program is expected to address some aspects of early risk assessment and detection, mechanisms of pathophysiology, or interventions that will improve health outcomes. Ideally, the program will encompass basic discovery research coupled with clinical translational studies.

The successful applicant will be expected to compete for external funding and offer strong research training for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other trainees. The successful candidate will be provided with research start-up funding and will be afforded the opportunity to apply for a CFI JELF grant to acquire additional research infrastructure.

They will also have access to exceptional facilities, which include:

 a) Outstanding laboratory facilities in the Division of Reproductive Sciences in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alberta. The laboratories include facilities for molecular assessments, cell culture, ex vivo and in vivo modeling. The laboratories are located amidst the biomedical research complex on the main campus of the University of Alberta. Members of the Division emphasize individual excellence combined with an enthusiasm for collaboration. There will be significant opportunity to collaborate with clinical colleagues.

b) The Women & Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), a partnership between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, with financial support from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.  WCHRI is the only research institute in Canada and one of the few in the world, to focus on women’s, children’s and perinatal health ( 

c) The Lois Hole Hospital for Women (LHHW) is one of Canada’s premier women’s hospitals and busiest maternity centers with over 7000 deliveries annually focusing on high-risk obstetrics and maternal-fetal medicine along with specialized gynecological services and cancer surgery. (

d) The main academic offices of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology are based at the LHHW, along with its undergraduate and postgraduate medical education program. A dedicated clinical research center within the LHHW is currently under construction. This centre will offer an outstanding opportunity for clinical collaboration and advancement of translational research in applied research. The Department has established a Royal College of Canada fellowship program in Maternal-Fetal Medicine for 2018 and offers MSc and PhD graduate student programs in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The successful candidate will be offered a tenure track appointment contingent on ongoing government funding in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement, which offers a comprehensive benefits package. The successful candidate will be appointed within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, residing within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with an adjunct or cross appointment to the Department of Physiology. They will also be expected to develop linkages and collaborations within the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute. The successful candidate will have 75% protected time for research with the remaining 25% time dedicated to teaching and administration. A contribution to teaching reproductive physiology in the Department of Physiology is expected.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) and have an excellent record of accomplishment, including relevant postdoctoral training, publication or primary research articles in high impact peer reviewed journals, success in gaining competitive external awards at the national or international level and the ability to mentor research trainees effectively.
