This call is limited to current employees of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) at the University of Alberta (UA) is inviting nominations for Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs (CRC). Tier 2 CRCs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e. candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination).  Tier 2 applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (e.g. where career breaks exist such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave; clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.  Please contact the Research Services Office (Glen Thomas, UA CRC Coordinator and Advisor; for more information.  Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information, including further details on eligibility criteria (

Candidates are not limited to a specific area of research. However, the proposed research program is to be in alignment with the UA’s strategic research plan and the FoMD’s strategic plan and recognized areas of research strength and priority. The FoMD Vice-Dean, Research is leading this search.  A sub-committee of the Faculty Research Committee, chaired by the vice-dean, will review the submissions and make its nomination recommendations to the FoMD dean. Additional members from FoMD, the UA and potentially external to the university will likely be added to this committee.  The committee will be guided by the UA’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Public Accountability and Transparency Requirements.

Please provide the following by June 5, 2018 in electronic format (PDF preferred):

1. Your CV in Common CV format. The CIHR Academic format is preferred.

2. A personal statement (two pages maximum) of why you feel that you that you meet the expectations of a Tier 2 CRC.  Please address the specific Tier 2 requirements and do not simply repeat what is in your CV. FoMD acknowledges the potential impact of career interruptions on a candidate’s record of research achievement and, therefore, candidates are encouraged to explain the impact of these career interruptions on their record of research achievement in their applications (for further information, please visit ).   A general description of your research activities for the next 3-5 years should be included as part of this statement.

The final deadline for submission will be October 22, 2018 with the first UA internal deadline of August 15, 2018. Approved applicants will be required to commit a significant amount of time to work on their submission.
