We invite members with an academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta, to apply for the position of Assistant Dean, Health Outcomes Research

The Faculty possess significant strengths in health outcomes research and the use of real world evidence to inform decisions, generate hypotheses, improve health services, and ultimately to improve health outcomes. The opportunity in Alberta for the use of health data in research is advancing with improved data access through the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) Data Platform, provincial secondary data use initiatives, and the future implementation of province-wide a clinical information system. Leadership and coordination from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is critical to ensure these evolving opportunities are maximized. In addition, under the umbrella of the Northern Alberta Clinical and Research Centre (NACTRC), a Real-World Evidence Research Unit is being developed to leverage faculty expertise and to bring together collaborators including clinicians, researchers, industry, payers, care providers, regulators and HTA bodies to generate value-based evidence using new and future health data resources. The research unit will include personnel for project management, data analytics, and health economic evaluation as well as collaborate with existing platforms or research groups.

The successful candidate for this role will have experience with health outcomes research and the use of health data for real world evidence. They will hold an active research program in this area.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to create and implement a vision for the Real-World Evidence Research Unit (NACTRC) that has a strong academic research arm, plus service arm
  • Build relationships and networks with the clinical academic community, government, and industry to use real-world data to improve decision making and health outcomes
  • Provide methodological analytical expertise and leadership regarding the gathering, analysis and utilization of real-world health data
  • Represent the Faculty and NACTRC on various committees as it relates to data access, quality, management and analytical methods
  • Contribute to the development of proposals, protocols, reports and publications involving real-world data; determine project feasibility and priority in conjunction with the Steering Committee or other future governance/oversight structures

The ideal candidate will have an MD, MD/PhD as well as experience in clinical or health outcomes research in a university setting or other research agencies with a strong working knowledge of academic/health system research administration policies and issues.

This 3-year term appointment reports to the Associate Dean, Clinical Research, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Time commitment for this role is 0.2 FTE (1 day per week) and is accompanied with a modest stipend.
