The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta is a premier academic health sciences centre, dedicated to advancing health through teaching, research and patient care.

To support the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's commitment to excellence, we are seeking experienced development professionals to join our major gifts team at a very exciting time of growth and opportunity.  These individuals will be responsible for executing prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities, which have as an objective, the development of short and long-term philanthropic support of the Faculty.

Reporting to the Director of Development, Advancement (DD), the Associate Director is responsible for the management of a portfolio of major gift suspects, prospects and donors, including individuals, corporations, associations and foundations that have the potential interest and financial resources to make gifts of $50,000 and more.  This position participates in the creation and elaboration of relationship building, fundraising strategies and coordinates contacts between the university community and key major donor prospects.  The Associate Director will work with the Director of Development and the Assistant Dean, Advancement on faculty-based initiatives, and where appropriate, on university-wide advancement initiatives. Please note that regular travel to visit donors and prospective donors is a requirement of this position.

Responsibilities include:

Participates in strategy development and execution for faculty fundraising:

  • Works with the Dean of Medicine & Dentistry, Assistant Dean, Advancement (ADA), Director of Development, Advancement and faculty-based leaders to develop appropriate fundraising priorities for the faculty
  • Works with the DD to establish and evaluate annual fundraising targets and operational plans
  • Reports regularly to the DD on progress toward annual fundraising targets, including bi-weekly updates and annual performance evaluations

Major gift fundraising:

  • Adheres to the University of Alberta Prospect Management Policy
  • Maintains a major donor/prospect portfolio of 150 relationships with identified capacity to give $50,000, payable over up to five years
  • Personally visits 150 major gift prospects/donors annually, with a goal of achieving two proposals monthly, at least eight solicited major gifts closed (1/3 of proposals), and two planned gifts closed or bequests recorded
  • Tracks, documents and communicates fundraising activity in the Advance database and shares information with colleagues as appropriate
  • Identifies and engages volunteers as advisors to the faculty fundraising strategies as appropriate

Under the direction of the Director of Development, Advancement, works in partnership with the Advancement Office on fundraising programs:

  • Works collaboratively on alumni engagement strategies for the faculty
  • Collaborates regularly with the Advancement Office on prospect identification for faculty- based fundraising priorities
  • Supports annual giving strategies for the faculty – activities executed by the Advancement Office – and works with the Advancement Office to evaluate results
  • Through the Director of Development, Advancement, partners with the Office of the Recording Secretary on gift processing (including agreements, terms of reference, etc.) and appropriate gift acknowledgement
  • Jointly manages stewardship of major donors with the Advancement Office
  • Collaborates with the Director of Development, Advancement and the Advancement Office on writing projects such as cases for support, proposals and stewardship reports, as necessary

Collaborates with other faculty-based fundraisers, faculty-based academic leaders and senior university representatives (under the direction of the Director of Development, Advancement and the Advancement Office):

  • Actively participates in Advancement community activities including FYI, faculty major gift committee and brown bag sessions for skills development, information sharing and the implementation of joint opportunities and common challenges
  • As directed by the DD or ADA, may act as faculty-based representative for university-wide fundraising strategies and joint initiatives with other faculties

Contributes to the engagement between donors and faculty academic leaders:

  • Works with the ADA and Medicine & Dentistry Development staff to create and execute plans that would involve the Dean in 75 face-to-face fundraising visits per year, ideally with the faculty’s top prospects
  • Provides appropriate briefing materials to the Dean, ADA, DD and other faculty academic leaders to execute strategies with donors
  • Participates in coaching and leadership as necessary to engage faculty members in strategic fundraising activities, including appropriate preparation and follow-up
  • Schedules and plans travel as necessary to facilitate personal visits with top prospects

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, CFRE designation is preferred
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in major or planned gift fundraising with a track record of closing gifts of $50,000 and greater, preferably in higher education; related experience in sales, financial services and business development will be considered
  • Proven ability to develop strategies for and implement major gift solicitations
  • Ability to prepare, coach and brief faculty-based leaders for fundraising activities
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and to handle multiple accounts simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to be a contributing member of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of a variety of fundraising tools and strategies and demonstrated experience with activities throughout the giving cycle, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Ability to understand the needs and interest of major gift donors in order to develop relationships between them and the University of Alberta
  • Interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the university’s fundraising priorities through developing excellent relationships with faculty and academic leaders, volunteers, and representatives from the Advancement Office
  • Demonstrated project management, organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle competing priorities in a high-paced environment
  • Possess strong communication and organizational skills

In accordance with the Sessional and Other Temporary Staff agreement, this position has an initial appointment of 3 years, with the possibility of extension, offers a comprehensive benefits plan found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca and an annual salary range of $74,723 to $124,718. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

This position is located in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry's Main Office on the 2nd floor of the Walter Mackenzie Centre in Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2R7.
