The Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) at the University of Alberta is recruiting a Research-Intensive PhD Scientist at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is responsible for establishing an independent research program in one of two areas of strategic importance for the Department, namely hematologic oncology research, in the Division of Hematology or rehabilitation research in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  Emphasis on genetics and/or the molecular pathogenesis or experimental therapeutics of hematologic malignancies or sensory/motor adaptive rehabilitation and neuro-rehabilitation device research are considered to be highly desirable and would align with the strategic plan of the Department. 

The successful candidate will be provided with competitive startup funding, and is expected to develop a primary linkage with one of 9 Research Institutes, and may secure adjunct appointment(s) and collaborations in any of the 20 academic departments in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (

Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent and are encouraged to review the current areas of research within FoMD and to consider such strategic documents as the University of Alberta’s Comprehensive Institutional Plan ( and the FoMD Strategic Plan which is currently under development (

Candidates will be expected to compete for external salary funding. All eligibility requirements of such programs must be met. FoMD will provide guidance and support in the development of these applications. The successful candidate will be provided with substantial research start-up funding and will be provided with the opportunity to apply for a CFI JELF grant to acquire additional research infrastructure.
